Google Apps Education
Webinar: Hear how one district uses Google Apps Education as a collaborative teaching platform
Sign up for a free live webinar with Google Apps Education Edition and Maine Township High School District on Wednesday March 24th. Hear how the technology is seamlessly integrated into activities and supports learning objectives. Maine Township will share how they use Google Apps in lessons and demonstrate problem and project based activities that are only possible when using online read/write tools. You can even post your questions for the Maine Township High School District and Google teams ahead of time.

YouTube
YouTube is now offering parents and teachers more control over the content they see with the announcement of Safety Mode. When you opt in to Safety Mode, you're choosing not to see mature videos and comments that aren't against our Community Guidelines, but may not be appropriate for someone under 18. Like Google SafeSearch, Safety Mode on YouTube does not remove content from the site but rather keeps it off the page for users who opt in. No filter is 100%, so keep in mind that supervision is still the best parental control. Check out the demo!

Doodle 4 Google
The Doodle 4 Google competition is back for its third year and is open to K-12 students in U.S. schools who are invited to create their own Google doodle inspired by the theme, "If I Could Do Anything, I Would . . . " Teachers should go to www.google.com/doodle4google to register their school by 11:59:59 P.M. Pacific Time (PT) on March 17, 2010. Make sure to check out details on a new incentive we're adding this year called the Extra Credit: Technology Booster Awards. Parents and children interested in participating should pass this link on to their teachers. Teachers must sign up on behalf of their students and submit their doodles and entry forms by March 31, 2010 11:59:59 P.M. Pacific Time (PT) after they register their school.

Webinar: Hear how one district used Google Apps Education to create a curriculum portal

Sign up for a free live webinar with Google Apps Education Edition and Clarkstown Central School District on Thursday February 10th. Learn how they created a collaborative portal for teachers to access and share resources and ideas across the entire district. You can even post your questions for the Clarkstown Central School District and Google teams ahead of time.

Calling all administrators! Applications are now open for our first ever Google Teacher Academy for Administrators, set to take place on Friday, March 5th in San Antonio, Texas, immediately before ASCD. If you are an educational leader or decision maker like a school site administrator (principal or ap), district administrator (coordinator or director), superintendent, school board member, or a representative from a county, state, national, or international agency, you are eligible to apply for the GTA for Admins; applications are now open until midnight, January 25th.

The U.S. House of Representatives' recently designated December 6-12, 2009 as Computer
Science Education Week
in recognition of the transformative role of computing
and necessity of rigorous computer science education at all levels. The CSEdWeek Web site,
www.CSEdWeek.org, will launch the week of Dec. 6th to be a hub for computer science
education resources and social networking.

Computer  Science Education Week
Today we've announced the launch of the international Google Model Your Town Competition, by far the biggest 3D modeling challenge we've ever had. It's open to just about everyone (age 13 and up), just about everywhere in the world. Help your students form a team, model buildings (using SketchUp or Building Maker) and upload them to your own collection in the Google 3D Warehouse by the end of February 2010. The winning town will receive $10,000 for their local school district, in addition to lots of other good stuff that will put your town on the map.

Common Sense Media offers free resources to help parents and educators connect on the media issues affecting kids in today’s "too much, too soon" culture. Their new tool, Your School Profile helps you keep parents up to date on media education happening at school, and lets you share media reviews and recommendations with your community. If 25 members of your parents or educators join by 12/31/09, your school will be entered to win 30 Flip Ultra HD video cameras!

Google Docs: Back to School Features
The Google Docs team recently added specific features for the classroom, including an equation editor, superscripts, subscripts, translation features, printed footnotes, and improved bullets. They also added page break and "go to page" logic branching to Google forms.

Create your class site using our Back to School Guides
Google Sites are a great way keep parents and students up to date on homework and school events, or for students to work together on class projects. Our Back To School Guides will help you create a class site, project site or school administrative site.

Back-to-School with Google Code University
Google Code University is a repository of educational materials focused on computer science. The content was developed by the best schools around the country and is always Creative Commons licensed for reuse and modification by educators and students. We just posted fresh course materials contributed by USC, Cal Poly, and UW. If you would like to share your materials let us know by going to the new submission form. We'd love to hear from you!

Google Webinar: Teaching Search in the Classroom Drawing on their vast experience with search education, Dan Russell, along with Google Certified Teachers Kathleen Ferenz, Cheryl Davis and Lucy Gray will discuss how to teach search in the classroom. Having developed Google's Search Education Lessons, they will discuss how you can customize the contents to the needs of your class and how guide your in-class discussions. The webinar will take place on Wednesday, August 19 at 5PM. Don't forget to register online and invite fellow educators to join us!

Google has reached an agreement with authors and publishers that will make millions of books more accessible in the U.S. You can view full pages from and purchase complete access to millions of in-copyright, out-of-print books or your school can purchase institutional subscriptions to offer your students and teachers complete access to millions of books.

We have heard from educators that they could use some help to teach better web search skills in the classroom and make sure Google is used well and to its full potential. We worked with Google Certified Teachers to develop a set of nine modular and practical lessons to help educators do just that.

Google and the Guggenheim Museum teamed up to launch the Design It: Shelter Competition. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's School of Architecture, this global competition challenges participants to create a shelter in 3D using Google SketchUp and geo-locate in Google Earth.
